Mowin' Em Down in the Empire State

Kiskatom Fire Department hosts National Lawn Mower Racing Series Stop

Ready, Set, Mow for 2003!

Catskill, NY – July 2, 2003 – New York’s Hudson Valley will be on the Cutting Edge of American motorsports as the Kiskatom Volunteer Fire Department hosts the 4th Annual STA-BIL Hudson Valley Regional, A Race For Riding Lawn Mowers, Saturday, July 19, 2003, 12:00PM at the Catskill Events Center, Route 32, Catskill, New York, in cooperation with the Greene County Fair.  Fair gates open at 10:00AM, racers should use the North Gate entrance which will open by 9:00AM.  Fair admission is $10.00. There is no additional charge to attend the lawn mower race. Special access to the paddock is available for an additional charge. The fair will feature entertainment, food and merchandise vendors, a beer garden, a midway, and fireworks.

The 4th Annual STA-BIL Hudson Valley Regional will feature racing in four road track classes: Stock, (10 mph), IMOW (20 mph), Prepared (35 mph) and Factory Experimental (50 mph), a “Future Mowers” division (ages 3 – 6), and the “Kiskatom Kup Challenge” open only to firefighters.  All cutting blades are removed.  The race is a Points Race on the STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series circuit.

“We’re looking forward to another great event,” said Kendall Stanley, local race director and member of the Kiskatom Volunteer Fire Department.  “STA-BIL lawn mower racing is very popular across the country, and especially big here in New York with the Hudson Valley Lawn Mower Racing Association.  We’ll surely be on the cutting edge!”

Racers in the STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series travel across the country each season competing for points, trophies, glory and bragging rights.  There are no cash prizes in lawn mower racing.  A sense of humor is not required, but is strongly encouraged. Racers from across New York and the East Coast are expected to compete including The Turfinator, Sodzilla, Blading Saddles, Mowin For Broke and Ace of Blades. Stanley adds, “We had racers at last year’s event that traveled to Catskill from fifteen states!”

The 4th Annual STA-BIL Hudson Valley Regional is the showcase event for the Hudson Valley Lawn Mower Racing Association, which was formed in 2002 to sanction and present lawn mower races throughout the area. A portion of the proceeds from each race go to charity. “Our signature event again this year will be the ‘Kiskatom Kup Challenge,’ our annual competition for firefighters who must compete in their full firefighting gear,” added Stanley.  “The winner will have their department name entered on the cup, will keep the cup for the year, and will have to defend the cup the following year.  We also encourage the public to come out and race.  Anyone 16 years or older can become a lawn mower racer.  Bring your standard stock riding lawn mower and we’ll find a place for you.  If you ever thought about racing and experiencing the thrill of speed and glory, then come out and join us.  We encourage local participation, and although racers from across the country will be competing, we have plenty of room for local sod warriors.  The mower, the merrier!”

The STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series has been featured on the TV sitcom "Home Improvement," The Discovery Channel, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Arizona Republic, Sports Illustrated, FOXnews.com, USA Today, CBS This Morning, The Paul Harvey Radio Network, WGY Clear Channel Radio, WRGB Channel 6, AutoWeek, Modern Maturity and will be televised on ESPN2 this fall.

Series sponsors include STA-BIL, the fuel stabilizer for lawn mowers and power equipment that keeps gas fresh for quick starts along with 104+ Octane Boost, HEET Gas-Line Antifreeze, No Leak Premium Sealers, Alumaseal, Carolina Footwear and Double-H Boots.
